Toddler Program

Toddlers are just beginning to engage in pretend play and our teachers plan engaging opportunities to inspire their play. The environment we provide at A Sunny Start Preschool is full of activities that are perfect for toddlers. It allows them to discover and play independently or with others. The introduction to The Creative Curriculum begins here. This bilingual class, taught in English and Spanish, centers on guiding our students to become independent, creative children with great awareness of the world around them. Our teachers are nurturing and sensitive to the needs of each child, while encouraging them to develop the confidence to thrive in the preschool environment.

Program Highlights

One year olds increasing vocabulary with their daycare teacherLanguage Development

  • Toddlers learn language naturally by hearing it used in context. Our students learn vocabulary by being spoken to, read to, listened to, and then encouraged to communicate their thoughts.
  • Our teachers closely observe each toddler and individualize their teaching to challenge each child.
  • Our toddlers discover the connection between spoken and written words by observing and experiencing them being used in the classroom.
  • By utilizing dictation techniques, our teachers label the students artwork and activities to instill the lesson that their words have meaning.
Super safe and fun playground for toddlers enjoying the Miami sun!Outdoor Activities

  • Toddlers enjoy the freedom of running around in our secure safe playground. Our Junior Playground is designed with the one to two year old child in mind, and boast a variety of areas for exploration and play.
  • Gross motor skills are developed through activities such as jumping, marching, running, and kicking and tossing bean bags and balls.
  • The outdoors provides an excellent vessel for discovering the outside world. Children observe the birds and squirrels who inhabit our neighboring trees, listen for the church bells ringing from across the street, and observe the planes that fly high overhead.
Healthy meals provided for all students through the child care food programIndependence

  • Our Toddler Class is a transitional program where children move from infanthood to early childhood. This is an age of substantial growth and development; you will be astounded by new things you’re your child will begin to do!
  • At meal times, children begin to eat on their own using a spoon and transition from a sippy cup to a regular cup. It is a messy experience, as many valuable lessons are, but these toddlers are becoming more independent by the spoonful!
Toddlers enjoy gluing and ripping paper during their daily creative activitiesSocial Skills

  • Toddlers can go through a variety of stages as they transition from solitary play (where children enjoy playing alone) to parallel play (where children play alongside each other, but not with each other) to associative play (where children begin interacting with their peers while playing.)
  • Our teachers are expertly trained to manage these interactions and teach children how to resolve conflict.
  • Children are guided in center-based play, where they learn to dress up in a variety of costumes and hats, put together simple puzzles, paint with their fingers and brushes, and build simple structures.
  • Through play, children learn social skills, turn-taking, and how to follow directions.
Sensory experiences, such as digging in dirt, make day care messy and fun!Intentional Activities

  • All toddler activities are carefully planned with a purpose for optimizing your child’s development. Our Toddlers engage in two small group activities per day, in order to maximize the opportunity for structured learning time.
  • Art activities are planned to support creative development and self-expression, as well as for refining fine motor skills and strengthening their small hands.
  • Sensory play, where children learn by touching, smelling, listening, looking, and tasting, allow toddlers to experiment and discover in order to support cognitive development.
  • Music and movement activities promote creativity and stimulate brain activity.
  • A variety of materials are provided that support emerging concepts such as color recognition, shape recognition, and sorting.

Little boy in class
When my daughter was 6 months old, I went to check out A Sunny Start Pre-School. I immediately knew this was the place for her when I was greeted by the infant teacher with a big smile. All the children in the school looked happy and all the classrooms were EXCEPTIONALLY clean and cared for. Four years later, my little girl is about to start VPK at this amazing school. I am heartbroken because she only has one year left here. In this bilingual environment, my daughter learned to sing the ABCs by the time she was 14 months old. She learned her colors and shapes before she was 2. Around 22 months, the teachers were fully invested in helping me get her potty-trained. And around 3 years old, my little girl was learning to write the letters of her name. This school definitely deserves the title “preschool” versus daycare. The teachers and director, Jennifer, make it each moment the students are with them valuable. Students not only excel in academic endeavors, but they are taught respect, good manners, and how to solve conflicts between each other. I credit Sunny Start for fostering a love for learning in my daughter. I feel privileged to have her surrounded by outstanding educators. I really cannot give this school enough praise. The teachers have become near and dear to my heart.

Parent Testimonials

  • My daughter graduated from the school this year and started Kindergarten. Going into her fourth week of her big transition, her teachers informed me that she had an outstanding base from her preschool and is reading first grade level! A Sunny Start Preschool prepared my little girl in a spectacular way! The staff is very professional and family oriented not to mention superb state of the art facility. Needless to say I highly recommend the school!

  • I love love love this preschool/daycare! Very caring and loving staff and my oldest son loves going every day! I am so excited my twins also started a few months ago, they are so happy here as well. The teachers here are amazing! They genuinely care about the students and the woman in charge of curriculum for the school is always looking for new and great ways to teach the kids. I have 3 children at this school and could not be happier.

  • My grandchildren have all attended A Sunny Start Preschool and this was the only preschool they attended. Three of the four are already in Elementary School and thanks to the foundation that they developed in this school, they are students with high grades. Thank you very much to all the teachers who are always attentive and patient with children. The quality of academics that children receive at this school is evident in their success.

  • I would recommend this school to any parent searching for a preschool with an excellent curriculum. My daughter is 7 years old and attended this preschool. After graduating from Pre K she tested advanced at her current Charter elementary school. Her teachers were impressed at her knowledge and how advanced her reading was. This school helped her read and went over all the subjects she needed to prepare her for Elementary. She recently tested for gifted this year by MDCPS. This was all due to the foundation she received here. The teachers are amazing and caring. Two of my friends that had their children here also tested for gifted. I am so happy with the school, the curriculum, the teachers, and the staff and now my son currently attends A Sunny Start Preschool. I would not go anywhere else.

  • I'm happy to have found this place. The attention is the best. The teachers are the best. My children learn something new every day. I wholeheartedly say to you that every child that goes through this program comes out a winner!

  • I recommended A Sunny Start Preschool to all whom have children from birth to 6 & more if they would take older.  I am a proud mother of very bright and advanced children thanks to the tutelage of Teacher Carmen, Milly, Angela, & Sofia. As you can see I have had an experience with every level of teacher in the school. I have a Kindergarten boy which I am proud to say is in K- 1 in his school. For those who do not know what K-1, this is where Kindergarten students are also being taught with 1st graders. My four year old is still at A Sunny Start Preschool and she is extremely bright. The curriculum in her class is incredibly advanced and even though I hate homework she is always excited and eager to do it. She can identify words and knows her numbers this also has to do with the fact she loves her school. All this and she has not yet started VPK because of her birthday, but she will be starting come this school year. Thank you Jennifer, Carmen, Milly, Angela, Sofia & Tatiana you guys are the best.
